Self-Proclaimed ‘Racketista’ Penny Lane Is on a Mission to Make Padel Cool

Penny Lane, a 2024 SI Swimsuit rookie, calls herself a “racketista,” loving all racket sports. Tennis started her interest, then a tournament in Acapulco, Mexico, introduced her to padel.

“I was fixated. My pal and I played daily. We said, ‘When we go back to L.A., we need to start playing it,’” she says on her SI Swimsuit photoshoot in Porto and the North, Portugal. “We go to L.A., and nothing happens. There are no courts. Private tribunals are hard to get into.”

Because it was “so popular everywhere [else],” the two were startled by the lack of padel play in Los Angeles and determined to fix it.

Based on their love of the “tennis aesthetic,” Lane and photographer Grace Adèle founded Pleasure Padel Club to foster a community for the sport and retro-inspired athleisure.

They want to make “padel a bit more cool and have that kind of cool, chic aesthetic to it,” she explains.

Lane loves tennis and padel, therefore she plays pickleball. Lane says she “was very much against it” but has “been converted to think it’s cool”.

“Padel is fun and amazing. The sport is quick and easy, she says, adding that pickleball is too. Lane calls it a “easy” and “fun” game “anyone can play.”
